FEEL THE LOVE: Self-love short shows you how to make the most of yourself.

When it comes to the art of self-stimulation, most guys consider themselves relative masters of their domain. But what they don’t realize is that there are as many ways to masturbate as there are positions in the Kama Sutra. What if these onanistic techniques were taught in school, in a class like Woodshop or Home Ec? That’s the premise behind Masturbation: Putting the Fun into Self-Loving, a hilarious short screening June 13 as part of the New Festival’s “Boys’ Briefs” presentation.
Patterned after the now-cheesy Army instructional films of the 1950s, the mini-mockumentary is “hosted” by child psychologist Dr. Sigmund Winston and his adolescent sidekick Billy. As the story goes, the film was originally part of an educational series that included Foreskin: Cleaning and Caring for Life and Urine Therapy: The Healthy Alternative that have only recently resurfaced after decades in obscurity.
During his lesson, Dr. Winston educates young men on a variety of exotic techniques, from “Cool as a Cucumber” to “The Pillow Pumper.” Los Angeles filmmakers Charles Gage and J.T. Tepnapa got their inspiration from Jackinworld.com, a popular website devoted to onanistic delights.
“We were chatting online and laughing at all the crazy stuff on the site,” says Gage, the film’s producer and production designer. “After a few minutes of brainstorming we came up with the idea for a short film.”
Director Tenapa, who wrote the script in a single night, decided to film with classic 8mm stock to give the film an authentic 50s look. “I actually bought a Russian Kinoflex camera, which was perfect, because they haven’t changed those models in fifty years.”
While Masturbation isn’t intrinsically gay, it definitely has strong queer appeal.
“Everybody does it, but I think gay men are more comfortable discussing it than hetero guysand you can’t get much more homoerotic than a bunch of young cute guys ‘polishing the bishop,’” says Gage. “It’s really fun to gauge people’s reactions,” adds Tepnapa. “Gays just laugh, but sometimes the straight people squirm a little.”
The short has been making the rounds at festivals around the country (and nabbed a PlanetOut.com Short Movie Award), but the two auteurs are already hard at work on their next project, a film about a couple whose attempt to rob a bank in drag goes horribly wrong.
“I’ve learned so much making Masturbation, says Tepnapa, “I can’t wait to make the next film even better.” Perhaps once they’re done, they’ll produce the next installment in their infamous series: Anus: Much More Than An Exit.
Masturbation: Putting the Fun into Self-Loving will be shown as part of “Boys Briefs” program on June 13 at 6 p.m. at the at NYU Cantor Film Center, 36 E 8th St. For more details visit newfestival.org.
